So true

A quick post today, as I'm about to unload the kiln and then reload it with more glazed pieces for next Saturday's markets.

I found this quote last week and wanted to post it here:

And so, for those who do buy handmade...

thank you

  1. Funny how us buyers never really consider the hundreds of hours of failure and experimentation.
I will from now on, that's for sure.

    1. Thanks River. It's sometimes easy to forget the time spent on handmade. And, it's always so nice when it is appreciated.
Take non-fast food. So much time goes into planning, preparation and creating good wholesome food - homemade or restaurant.
A friend of ours is a chef, and it never ceases to amaze me how much care and work he puts into a meal.

  2. Ain't that the truth!
I hate when someone asks me how long it took me to do a painting.
Some people just don't get it, they are so used to buying something mass-produced.
    Sigh....
I hope you do a post full of photos of some of your pieces!
(and thanks for that awesome comment you left me! loved it! xoxo)

    1. It's an artists' lament I'm afraid, Cynthia. And, it can be a downer when people say that they can, "get cheaper at Target".
A modern day malady. Mass production has numbed the general appreciation of quality handmade and heart-made work.
But, I'm glad that there are still many people who love to seek out and specifically buy from the artist. As you well know :)

    2. "I can get it cheaper at Target" - if someone said that to me about my handmade item it would make my head swirl in frustration. Truly, people are made distorted by mass production.

Do you think there's a corner-turning though? I feel like quality handmade is totally and absolutely sexy now. But that could just be a distortion in my own appraisal living in the hills?? (I don't want to sound snobby about that; I just think that there's maybe a bit of a deeper appreciation for art simply because there's so many artists up here).

I look forward to buying one of your pieces one day :)

    3. It's funny Sue, since moving to Melbourne, and attending various markets and craft festivals from the hills to the sea, I am amazed at how much Victorians truly appreciate handmade/recycled/up-cycled/salvaged. And, not just because it's now trendy.
I speak to older marketeers who tell me that Victoria has a long and loved tradition of well attended markets - many of which still operate today.
I'm honoured to be a part of that :)

  3. Vicki, I LOVE that quote, it's so completely true. So many people just don't realize, or even think about, how much of themselves an artist puts into their art and everythings that goes into making it.

Thank you so much for your kind words about my photos, you've no idea how much you lifted my spirits!

    Blessings,

    Victoria

    1. It is harder these days, Victoria, as so much can be taken for granted with little consideration.
But, from the comments I read here, and the many, many people out there who truly appreciate the time, love and sometimes (often) tears that go into what they choose to buy, it makes it all worthwhile.
I also believe that if children are taught to nurture their creative spirit from a young age, experiencing the highs and lows of their chosen craft, they can grow into adults who see the worth in others' work.

And, your lovely photos always delight. A magical gift that you share on your blog, and I'm so glad you do :)

  4. This is WONDERFUL, Vicki! "You are buying a piece of heart...." I LOVE that! And I have always felt that by putting all my heart, passion and soul into my art work, some kind soul would feel all the heart and love and want a piece of that. It's a good thing, this sharing of love. It's way beyond objects, it's about people connecting in deep way, that seems quiet a first, but is very profound--or at least can be! :o) So nice to have reminders like this... Thank you for this share, my friend. Hope all goes will with your market next weekend! ((LOVE & HUGS))

    1. The heart knows what it wants - and it truly does connect with what speaks to it.
From something as tiny as a miniature painting, not much bigger than a coin, to a fine piece of hand-carved furniture or a sculpture as big as a house, will connect and speak to like minded souls anywhere in the world.
It is a wondrous thing, to "buy a piece of heart".
To hold a piece of someone's imagination in your hands.

It can be very powerful, and yes, I agree Tracy, very profound :)

  6. Sometimes I am asked how long it takes me to make something and all I can say it has taken all of my life.
