equal night

Here, this evening, as we approach the vernal equinox in the southern hemisphere, there is an eerie quiet in the forest.

A stillness and anticipation from the wild creatures.
No birds are singing right now – a rare thing, as evensong is a regular occurrence just before twilight.

Even Jack has sensed a change and seems acutely alert.

Soon, the length of day and night will be nearly equal in all parts of the world.

And, for a time...

Balance.

  1. Up here (300kms north of Capricorn) I hardly notice. I'd like to be hopeful for Sunday's Super Moon eclipse, but with suburban light pollution...well, c'est la vie.

    1. Light pollution does ruin sky watching doesn’t it? There's nothing quite like an inky black countryside night sky blanketed by myriad sparkling stars.

Here on the mountain, they’re predicting full cloud cover and showers on Sunday night.
Although, it wouldn’t matter if we did have clear skies, as I’ve heard that much of Australia, New Zealand and Asia apparently will not be able to see the supermoon lunar eclipse all. Pity about that.

  2. I'd forgotten about the Equinox. Perhaps that explains my slightly over-the-top happy mood today.

    1. It could well do :)
And, even though we won't be able to see it, I'm sure the up coming supermoon lunar eclipse might affect us all in certain ways too. The moon has a powerful pull.

  3. How I wish that we would change our seasons at the equinox. It makes much more sense to me, than choosing the first of the month.
And I do love this temporary balance...

    1. I agree. To me, it feels as though it's genetically inherent in us to be more in tune with nature than with man made calendars.
The equinox does have a lovely calm stillness doesn't it?

  4. you're not a person.
i have known it all along.
you are some mystical being that was sent here.
you try to seem human. and you succeed.
but sometimes there are glimpses of the REAL you.
the one who is part of the forest and the birds and dragons and blind dogs and enchanting creatures.
    and the seasons...
    and i love you.
    furever.
and jack's smiling face. ♥ and then his look of knowing.
    like you. ♥

    1. Careful Tam, that mystical pedestal you have me on is wobbling… lol.

Watching Jack, dear old boy, I see he has a deep inner "knowing" far and beyond his lack of sight and sound. He's the mystical one, not me ;)
      Love you ♥

Computers can be a pain sometimes, when they don't talk to eachother :)
Our power will be down for a few hours today while they line works in the area.

  6. Vicki, I love this post and the photos, especially the second one of Jack. He has that "something just touched my tail but I didn't see it!" look. Happy spring!
